Introduction

  • Technology ghostwriter serving major trade publications.
  • Creator and author of the automotive blog crankSHIFT.
  • Co-founded a video game startup.

Experience

In a former life, Jeremy Laukkonen ran an auto shop in the north end of Seattle. He can swap out a distributor and set it perfectly without the aid of a timing light (and did just that one time in the New Mexico desert), but his interests always skewed more toward the tech side of things. Now, after making a move into writing about consumer technology more than a decade ago, he's become a tech ghostwriter serving major trade publications as well as a lead technology writer for Lifewire on a variety of tech topics, including EVs.

Jeremy attributes his success in writing about those technologies to past experiences that taught him the importance of breaking down complex technical subjects in understandable ways. He uses and writes about tech from Apple to Windows.

A self-confessed gaming junkie, Jeremy covered the Xbox Series launch for Lifewire by testing out the console before its public release (and has a PlayStation and a Switch, too). He has ton of hands-on experience with peripherals and components, including testing of dozens of routers, mesh systems, and accessories. He has built, upgraded, and maintained his home network for more than 20 years and thinks his home might be smarter than he is since his determination to make daily life easier through technology has found him installing smart products on thermostats, garage doors, fans, lights, and even his vacuum cleaner.

A huge fan of home entertainment, Jeremy's first streaming device was a Windows PC connected to a TV, before streaming devices were even a thing. He's had his hands on just about every streaming device since then, along with smart TVs and everything else entertainment-related.

Jeremy has also been plugged into EVs from the start. He gained first-hand experience when some of the first-ever hybrids rolled through his shop in the early 2000s, and sat in on industry-sponsored continuing education courses and seminars designed to keep technicians up-to-date on the myriad complex systems that power battery electric vehicles. Since hanging up his wrenches and MODIS, he’s followed along from the sidelines, reading trades and avidly watching the massive advancements that have been made in electric vehicle technology over the years.

In addition to his tech writing, Jeremy is the author of the urban fantasy novel Mechanics of Death and the creator of the automotive blog crankSHIFT.

My Gear

My work machine was a custom Windows 10 PC that I built myself until a hurricane blew my roof off. While I plan my next build, my main rig is a Gigabyte Aero 17 that rocks a GTX 3060. When I'm away from my desk, I pack either my M1 MacBook or iPad Pro. My weapon of choice in the smartphone arena is a Pixel 3, although I also have a second generation iPhone SE (in Product RED, of course.)

Education

Jeremy graduated from Shorecrest High School in Shoreline, WA, and attended Shoreline Community College. His relevant education is all practical.
